In this blog post we'll cover the different Goldendoodle generations to help you better understand the differences and provide you with the knowledge you need when searching for you future goldendoodle puppy or speaking to a breeder. We are using goldendoodles are our example to make things easier to understand, but this can all be applied to any doodle dog.
Understanding Goldendoodle Generations
A few basic things to note. The "F" in doodle generations stands for "Filial," and it is used to denote the generation of a particular crossbreed. In the context of Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, and other similar mixed breeds, the "F" is followed by a number indicating the generation. Goldendoodles come in various generations, each denoting the mix of their parent breeds. Here's a breakdown of the most common Goldendoodle generations:
F1 Goldendoodles (First generation):
Definition: First-generation Goldendoodles, resulting from the crossbreeding of a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle.
Genetic Percentage: 50% Golden Retriever, 50% Poodle.
Coat Types: Varied, can be straight, wavy, or curly.
Hypoallergenic Traits: May be less likely to cause allergies than some purebred dogs, but individual reactions can vary. More likely to shed. Not recommended for individuals or families with allergy concerns.
F1B Goldendoodles (First Generation Backcross):
Definition: Second-generation Goldendoodles, bred by crossing an F1 Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle.
Genetic Percentage: Approximately 75% Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever
Coat Types: Often wavy to curly, with increased likelihood of curlier coats.
Hypoallergenic Traits: More likely to be hypoallergenic due to increased Poodle genetics.
F1BB (First Generation Backcross to a Poodle)
Definition: F1BB Goldendoodles are obtained by breeding an F1B Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle.
Genetic Percentage: Approximately 87.5% Poodle, 12.5% Golden Retriever.
Coat Types: Typically very wavy to curly.
Hypoallergenic Traits: The generation most likely to be hypoallergenic due to a higher percentage of Poodle genetics. Great for families or individuals highly concerned with allergies.
F2 Goldendoodles (Second Generation):
Definition: F2 Goldendoodles are the result of breeding two F1 Goldendoodles.
Genetic Percentage: 50% Golden Retriever, 50% Poodle.
Coat Types: Varied, similar to F1, can be straight, wavy, or curly.
Hypoallergenic Traits: May be less likely to cause allergies, but individual reactions can vary. Because F2's have a bit more genetic diversity than F1's they can be a little better form individuals or families with allergy concerns, but still not as good as F1B, F1BB, or F2B.
F2B (Second Generation Backcross):
Definition: F2B Goldendoodles are obtained by breeding an F2 Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle.
Genetic Percentage: Approximately 62.5% Poodle, 37.5% Golden Retriever.
Coat Types: Often wavy to curly, with increased likelihood of curlier coats.
Hypoallergenic Traits: More likely to be hypoallergenic due to increased Poodle genetics.
Multigenerational Goldendoodles (f3 AND BEYOND):
Definition: Also known as F3 and beyond, Multigenerational Goldendoodles result from breeding two Goldendoodles of any generation.
Genetic Percentage: Variable, depending on the specific breeding program and goals.
Coat Types: Breeders aim for consistency, often with wavy to curly coats.
Hypoallergenic Traits: More likely to be hypoallergenic due to a higher percentage of Poodle genetics, depending on the breeding program.
